The Lion's Roar

Sometimes I don't know what to say about an outfit.  Sometimes I just out on things that look good and then I walk out the door.  Not every outfit gets much thought.  I wanted to wear this crop top I made, and this seemed like a good skirt to go with it.  That's pretty much how this came to be.  I wore it to Tuesday night dinner at my aunt's house, which was wonderful, as always.

Oh, in other news:  I got a job today!  I'm going to be a server at Lazlo's, which is one of the busiest restaurants in Lincoln.  I'm pretty excited about it!  Unfortunately, the training process is super rigorous and I have to take a bunch of tests.  Time to start studying!

Fighting for Nothing

You guys, I love this outfit and I love how these photos turned out.  I'm very excited about this.  Sometimes I'm so underwhelmed with my photos.  Sometime this summer, when I can stand outside for longer than ten minutes without freezing to death, I'm going to really play around with my camera and get my photos looking awesome.

I wore this outfit to go see A Chorus Line with my mom, and then to a Homegrown show afterward, which I was only at for about a half hour.  I was just too sick to stay very long.  So I'm not calling this a Homegrown outfit because I didn't really plan it around Homegrown.  I'm wearing the dress I made last summer.  The pattern is Burda 7376 and I'm absolutely in love with it.  It's definitely one of my summer staples.  I think I'm going to make a couple more of this pattern to wear this summer.  I've seen other people (specifically this cute lady here) make this pattern with more substantial fabrics and it looks totally different, so I might try that.  We'll see!

I'm hoping to have more time to sew soon.  I mean, maybe not because I'll be starting school and then hopefully work and I'm not sure I'll have a lot of space for sewing in Lincoln, but we'll see.  I'm hoping to have time and space, but I don't know when that will happen.  I have so many projects I want to make!

Making it: DIY Table Skirt

A few weeks ago, Adeline asked me to make a table skirt to put around the manicure table.  The whole salon is decorated very romantic and whimsical, and the plain grey manicure table just didn't fit it.

The first thing I did was take measurements of the table.  Since it's really more of a desk shape, I decided to make two separate pieces, instead of one big skirt.  Obviously, if you have an actual table then you can just make one big piece.

Since we wanted the skirt to cover the front two sections,  I measured from the back of the table to the front corner, and then the front of one section. (Both my pieces are going to be identical, so I only need to measure one side of the table.)  In case anyone is interested, my back to corner measurement was 13.5" and my front was 12".

I used:

Fabric (amount depends on how big your table is)
Ruler (or other measuring device)
Bias Tape
Velcro
Scissors
Pins
Basic Sewing Supplies (either a sewing machine, or needle and thread)

The first thing I did was measure out my pieces.  Since I wanted to put a couple of pleats in each panel, to give the skirt some volume, I added on a couple of inches to each piece I cut.  I actually just eyeballed this but feel free to add 2-4 (or more!) inches depending on how much fullness you want.  You can also skip the pleats all together, but I like the way to falls with some volume.  Another option would be to add gathers, instead, or even more, smaller pleats.

Of course the minute I lay my fabric down on the floor, Marco decides it's a bed.

So now we have two panels of fabric, one that is roughly 18" and another that is roughly 16".  I didn't cut a length, yet, because I wanted to hem it on the actual table.  Clearly, this fabric also needs to be ironed.  Once I cut out these pieces, I cut out two more that are identical.  Remember, this is going to be two separate pieces that are identical.

Here you can see the size difference between the side panel and the front panel.  The front is the smaller one.

The next step is to stitch together the side panel and front panel (right sides together) for both sections.

I wanted to give the top edge a nice looking finish, so I opted for bias tape.  You could also just hem it, or leave it raw if your fabric won't unravel and you like the look!  (Sometimes bias tape is hard to use if you are unfamiliar with it, so keep that in mind)

Next, I guesstimated the middle of each panel and made a couple of pleats.  I didn't measure them while I was making them, but I did make sure that the panels all ended up being the correct size and that the pleats matched up.  I then hand-stitched each pleat down.

Lastly, I hemmed the sides and bottom of each section and added velcro to the top edges.

I put sticky-back velcro on the table, as well.  This way, the skirt can be switched out easily.

Glitter In Their Eyes

New location for you guys today!  Yesterday at work we had a last minute cancellation, so we had an hour long break in the day.  Adeline went to run an errand, and I took outfit photos.  It was loads of excitement.  So you all get a little peak at what my workplace looks like.  Isn't it cute?  You can't see my desk in these photos, but I do have one that I sit at just to the left.

I had a huge sewing day on Monday.  I spent around 9 hours just sewing things.  It was awesome!  Sometimes I feel like I never have any time to sew anymore.  But on Monday I finished a table skirt for Adeline (how-to coming soon!), I hemmed a dress and a skirt of mine, and made a crop top out of excess fabric.  The skirt I'm wearing in these photos is the one I hemmed.

Secret Spells

Look at me being all adventurous in the woods, friends.  I actually almost fell of that tree I was standing on in that last photo.  It was wonderful.  These woods are just behind my parents' house.  I thought they would provide a fun contrast to the bright outfit I'm wearing.

How cute is this skirt?  When I found it at Ragstock, it was just a long piece of fabric with two ties.  It looked like someone had tried to make a wrap skirt out of it, and failed terribly.  So I removed the waistband and ties, gathered the skirt, and sewed the waistband back on.  Oh, and shortened it by about 12 inches.  It was a pretty easy fix, and it turned out pretty well.

I don't have much to say right now.  I'm really tired and I'm thinking about going to take a nap before rehearsal.  My life is incredibly exciting, friends.

Down to Earth

Can we talk for a minute about how awesome this skirt is?  I'm absolutely in love with it.  I got it at Savers last week, and I'm going to guess it was about a size 20.  I am much smaller than a size 20, for the record.  But I loved the cut and the print, so I wasn't about to let a little thing like it being 14 sizes to big stop me.

As you can see, there are 3 rows of top-stitching in the waistband of this skirt.  I think this skirt was handmade, as I cannot find a label in it anywhere and the seams are just a little wonky.  I'm not sure what the purpose of those three lines of top-stitching was, or how the original owner planned on keeping the skirt up, with neither elastic in the waistband nor any kind of closure.  So, I made a couple snips on the inside of the waistband, between the two stitch lines, and threaded through some elastic, measured to my waist size.  Viola!  It fits like a glove now, and has a cute gathered top to add to the fullness.

I've gotten really into pattern mixing recently.  This shirt is a super easy patterned piece because the stripes are so similar in color and they're very small.  It almost works as a solid, really.  Maybe that's cheating.

I'm so ready for it to be less dark and gloomy here.  The grass is so brown, and the trees are so brown.  I feel like, especially in this outfit, I just blend in to the background.  Note to self:  Wear brighter colors.  At least until the weather catches up.

This happens every time I go outside to take photos.  They just think it's so exciting.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day!
